Our History : Historical Timeline, Our Successes, Fact Sheet

Fact Sheet

  • The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra is a regional orchestra that serves an area of over 10,000 square miles and a population base of over 2 million people.
  • We are full time professionals whose primary, and often only source of income is the salary we earn from the symphony.
  • Each musician owns an instrument, which in many cases costs as much as a car, and sometimes more than a house!
  • Together we own millions of dollars worth of instruments.
  • We have have played at Carnegie Hall five times in the last 25 years -- most recently in 2003.
  • Most of the musicians in the symphony hold graduate degrees, and many have post-graduate degrees.
  • Ticket Sales for symphony concerts are INCREASING nationwide and in our community.
  • Between 2001 and 2005, the Syracuse Symphony budget grew 24%.
  • Between 2001 and 2005, musicians salaries only grew about 14%
  • Orchestras are a great community investment opportunity, because nearly their entire budget is spent within the community.
  • Students who study music score an average of 57 points higher on the verbal, and 41 points higher on the math portion of the SAT
  • We set the standard for chamber music. Most other orchestras with chamber music programs copied what we were already doing here in Syracuse.
